THE MAIN TYPES OF NATURAL STONE

Sandstone

A popular choice for outdoor paving. Generally porous and can absorb water, dirt, oils and other contaminants. Some sandstone can be moisture-sensitive, so pre-sealing may need to be considered before installation.

Limestone

Soft, natural appearance and used indoors and outdoors. Generally porous and can be susceptible to staining and weathering. Pre-sealing may be advised for absorbent or moisture-sensitive limestone.

Travertine

A form of limestone with natural holes and variation. Widely used around pools, patios and bathrooms and will generally benefit from sealing.

Marble

A dense, decorative stone used for floors, walls and feature areas. Some varieties can absorb liquids and are particularly susceptible to etching from acidic substances.

Granite

One of the hardest and most durable natural stones. Many granites are relatively low in porosity, although some varieties can still benefit from sealing.

Slate

Available in many colours and textures and commonly used for floors and outdoor paving. Its porosity varies considerably between different types, so sealing requirements can differ.

Basalt (Bluestone)

A dense volcanic stone commonly sold as Bluestone. Used for paving, pool surrounds and outdoor areas. Sealing requirements vary depending on the particular basalt product and its porosity.

SEALING REQUIREMENTS BY STONE TYPE

IMPORTANT

Sealing is protection, not a guarantee against staining. Clean spills promptly and use stone-safe cleaning products.
